Quick start

Start with a copy and a paste between two scenes, then the slots, then placing things with the mouse. If you work in a team, the last part puts a colleague's slots on your HUD.

Between two scenes

  1. Select a few objects and press Copy Local. Nothing changes in the scene, but the HUD in the corner of the viewport now shows slot 1 with a picture of what you copied.
  2. Open another scene, or a new one, and press Paste Local. The objects arrive where they were, materials and all: what went into the slot was a scene file, so it survives closing Max.
  3. Select something else and press Copy Local with Shift held. That's slot 2; Shift with Paste brings it back. Ctrl, Alt and their combinations take you up to eight, and the HUD lights the slot while you hold the keys, so there's nothing to remember.

Placing things

  1. Turn on Paste on Cursor on the toolbar. Now a paste does not land straight away; the objects hang off the mouse until you click.
  2. Click to set them down. Hold the button and drag up or down first and they scale; right-click and the whole thing is cancelled with nothing left behind.
  3. In Settings › Copy & Paste turn on Continuous Stamp and Align to Surface. Every click now leaves a copy standing on whatever is under the cursor, and the next one is already on the mouse. Right-click when you've placed enough.

With a colleague

  1. In Settings › Network add a target for each person (a name and a folder on a share everyone can reach), yourself included.
  2. Copy Remote works like Copy Local but writes into your folder on the share. Your colleague sees the slot appear on their HUD, in the row with your name on it.
  3. They press Change Target until you're the active one, and press Paste Remote. With Collect & Send Textures on, the bitmaps travel too, so it renders on their machine the way it did on yours.
