CopyPaste Studio

A slot-based clipboard for 3ds Max: geometry and materials between scenes, and between colleagues over a network share. This is the reference: every button, every window, every setting.

What it is

Copy saves the selected objects, together with their children, materials and maps, as a scene file in a slot. Paste merges the slot back in, into any scene, in any session, on any machine that can reach the folder. There are eight, on the modifier keys.

LocalYour own slots, in a folder on this machine. Between two scenes, or between today and next week.
RemoteA folder per person on a share. Copy Remote fills yours; Paste Remote reads whoever is the active target. Their slots appear on your HUD.
Material ModeThe same slots for materials instead of objects.

Three things show the slots: the toolbar buttons with the modifier keys, the HUD in the corner of the viewport, and the Asset Browser window.

Install

  1. Download the .mzp from your Gumroad library.
  2. Drag it onto a 3ds Max viewport. One installer covers 3ds Max 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027.
  3. Restart Max. Then Customize › Customize User Interface › Toolbars, category CopyPaste Studio: drag the buttons onto a toolbar of your own.

The scripts go into your user startup scripts folder and the icons into usericons. To remove, delete the ESCP_* files from there.

The toolbar

Copy Local · Paste LocalThe selection into a local slot, and back. Hold Shift, Ctrl or Alt for slots 2 to 8; see Slots and shortcuts.
Copy Remote · Paste RemoteThe same, on the share: into your own folder, out of the active target's.
Paste on CursorPaste follows the mouse until you click. See Paste on Cursor & Stamp.
Material ModeThe slots hold materials instead of objects. See Material Mode.
Change TargetThe next network target becomes the active one; Shift+click goes back.
Asset BrowserThe window with every slot. See Asset Browser.
SettingsEvery option. See Settings.

Every button is a macro in the CopyPaste Studio category, so any of them can be put on a keyboard shortcut, a quad menu or another toolbar in Customize › Customize User Interface. The modifier keys work with a shortcut the same way they work with the button.
